Hello Oklahoma!!

First of all, I’d like to apologize for my lack of updating on this news page.   Things have been VERY busy around the QTH. Between the Texhoma and Enid hamfests, working on my new shop, occasionally baby sitting the new grandson, Wilma preparing to retire and OSU football, I’ve been booked up.   I didn’t even get to attend the Noble Co. Repeater Groups Christmas Dinner because of baby sitting the aforementioned grandson.   So, after the holidays, I hope things will get back to some semblance of normalcy.

The Texhoma hamfest, was a great success! Lots of attendance, lots of forums and lots of goodies. Being the West Gulf Division hamfest was an opportunity for the fest to really shine and show folks how good a fest it is and will be in the future. I look for more and more great things from Henry Allen and the committee. I know our Director and Vice-Director had a great time and David Woolweaver, K5RAV, presented some books to the Viking Radio Club out of Lawton….but I got to beat him to the punch. He gave them the 2011 Handbook……..I got them the 2012 version!! Sorry, David! Those Vikings are really going great guns. Be listening for them on the bands, especially during the School Roundup and other events.

Next, the Enid hamfest was another big success. The Enid crew did an excellent job with it. They were worrying about being able to pull it off, but I’m here to tell you, they did a superb job. In addition to the League/ARES forum, Mary Peelman and Jack Skinner gave a traffic handeling forum. Really good stuff. I’m going to see if they will give it at all the hamfests in 2012. I want to thank Jay Kruckenberg, K5GUD for handeling the ARES forum in the absence of our SEC, Mark Conklin, N7XYO.

I will not be able to attend Green Country hamfest this year as my son is getting married that weekend. I know, I know, but some things take precedence. Director David Woolweaver, K5RAV will be there as well as most of the section cabinet, so they should be able to answer any questions you may have at the booth.

I will try to post some pics from Texhoma and Enid in a few days. (Holidays!)

Good Morning Hams!

I would like to thank everyone in the section that helped and participated in the SET this past weekend. Everyone involved, both volunteer and management alike, did an excellent job. You have shown that ARES is alive and well in Oklahoma. We still have a lot of work to do before we are able to cover the state like we need to, but we're on the right track.

Again, thanks to everyone for their assistance in making this the best section SET in years!

KD5NWS Introduces Royal Rangers to Ham Radio

Charles O’Dell KD5NWS has one wish for his boys in Royal Rangers: a ham station at every Royal Ranger Pow-Wow in the United States.

Pow-Wow is a camp-out held once a year throughout the U.S. In June 2011, the Oklahoma-Southern Kansas-Northern Texas regional Royal Rangers' Pow-Wow was held near Bell Cow Lake near Chandler, OK. About 5,000 boys attended from all over the country. The boys participate in paint ball, swimming, hiking, and blacksmithing. They learned camping and other skills.

O’Dell set up a Ham station at the Pow-Wow to promote Ham radio to the boys and range leaders.

“It was a great success,” O’Dell said. “The boys and leaders were very interested.”

The boys made contacts with 50 other hams and one in Canada. Dolph Grolock KB2AW of Luther, OK, helped set up and took photos of the event.

Royal Rangers is an outreach of the Assembly of God church; however, many independent churches sponsor Royal Rangers programs as well. A boy can join by attending a meeting. He does not have to be a member of the church. In addition to local meetings and events, Royal Rangers sponsors a National Camporama in Eagle Rock, Missouri.

O’Dell has been involved in Royal Rangers since 1963.

Hello Oklahoma!!

Well, the heat wave looks like it has finally subsided and our year of seriously lousy weather is winding down. I would first like to thank all the ARES members in the section for a job well done during record weather year. Whether you are part of the ARES-OK management team or a volunteer, THANK YOU for all you have done and I’m sure will do in the future.

Speaking of ARES, don’t forget the Simulated Emergency Test (SET) coming up Saturday October 1st. If you are in the dark about what the SET is or how to participate, just contact your local EC or our Section Emergency Coordinator, Mark Conklin, n7xyo@yahoo.com. One of them can assist you with the information. Lets have a good showing for our section SET.

The Viking Radio Club, which is a school based club, is blowing and going. They are sponsored in part by the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance. Gary Gerber, KB0HH and the Bunkhouse crew have been busy with the VHF contest this month and will be doing a balloon launch, chase and recovery on Saturday October 15th. You should join in on the fun if you get the chance. Check out the website,http://www.kcvhfgridbandits.com/

A lot of you are taking the time to set up public displays at your local county fairs….and if you aren’t, you should be. Be on the lookout for opportunities to put ham radio in front of the public. If there is a county fair, or some other special event going on in your area where there will be a lot of foot traffic moving by, get in and set up a special event station and demonstrate ham radio. If you have a big local mall or the local Wal-Mart store, get on their calendar now to set up a display some Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Have a VHF or UHF station set up and one of your other hams in the parking lot or at home and let the kids that come by “talk to Santa”. Not only will the kids be thrilled, but their parents will see your group and ham radio in a very positive light. Not to mention the possibility of garnering interesting for your next Tech class….

Your club is teaching classes aren’t you?? It’s the easiest way to build your numbers. Just make sure you have a competent instructor that knows his stuff and can make it fun.

Pink HAMsters Get-Together!

Pink HAMsters will have their monthly fellowship get-together on August 25, 6:00 pm. at Panera Bread (between 71st and 81st on Aspen, Broken Arrow).

Pink HAMsters is ham radio from a feminine perspective. You DO NOT have to be a ham operator to attend this event. This get-together is for women who are licensed ham radio operators or who are related to a ham operators. The purpose of this get-together is fellowship and fun and good food. The conversations are NOT all about ham radio. We talk about anything from home decor to travel to book publishing!

Hi there Oklahoma!!





First, let me apologize for not getting an April Section News done. Things have really been busy for me and I just couldn’t find enough hours in the day to get it done.





For those of you that haven’t heard, Wilma, W5WRO and I are moving. We are pulling up stakes in Ardmore and moving to Perry, OK. We should be there, though not unpacked, by the 3rd weekend in June. So, a June Section News may be a little suspect. Please bear with me….





Things in the section have been busy. We have had some changes in ARES management and have some new folks in place as Zone Coordinators in the SE, SW and the OKC Metro. I want to thank each of the outgoing ZEC’s for their service. The new ZEC’s are Steve Grayson, KE5BPL, ZONE 2 (SW), Kenny Orr, KC5ZDQ, ZONE 3 (OKC Metro), and Nick Hinkle, N7KPV, ZONE 6 (SE). Thanks guys for your willingness to serve.





Speaking of ARES, the tornado in Joplin and those in northeastern Oklahoma on May 22 have a lot of folks wondering how they can help. We have been in contact with the Missouri SM and SEC. They will let us know if and when they need any assistance. Please do NOT self deploy.





I have been busy with hamfest duties. The Durant tailgate on April was great as usual. I thought the jambalaya was great!! The fellowship was pretty good as well.





Charles Goodson, KC5UEG and I just returned from Dayton! It is still mind numbing to see all that cool hardware and all those hams in one place. Charles worked the EMCOMM booth for the League and I was in the PR booth. We got to meet astronaut, Doug Wheelock ( a really nice guy) and a lot of other folks. I renewed a lot of friendships and even bought some new gear for the new house…..(I had to sell my tower and SteppIR…..no room). If you ever get the chance, you have to see Dayton at least once.





Don’t forget, the ARRL National Convention will be at Ham-Com in Plano, TX, June10 and 11. The League will have a number of HQ staff in attendance as will the West Gulf Director, Vice-Director and the 4 SM’s. It’s your chance to put a face with a name and have an eyeball QSO.





Ham Holiday is scheduled for July 29 and 30 at the Biltmore Hotel in west OKC. This will be the Oklahoma State Convention. I’ll be there along with our Vice-Director, John Stratton.





The Texhoma Hamarama will be October 21 and 22. It will be the West Gulf Division Hamfest. There will be more vendors and more forums, so don’t miss it.





Last but not leas will be the Enid Hamfest on November 5th. So, make as many as you can!!





Field Day





I hope everyone is planning on a great Field Day. Our Director, Dr. David Woolweaver, K5RAV will be coming to Oklahoma this year to tour some sites with me. We are formulating a plan now, so if you are going to have Field Day, let me know where it will be and we will try to fit it into the schedule. We can’t make all of them, but we will try to have someone from the section management at most of the sites at least for a little while. Don’t forget to put your field day info on the leagues “Find a site” database.





When things settle down after the move, I’ll try to make up for a little lost time in the Section News.
