ARES-OK Regions Names and Realignment announced #ARRL #hamradio

A few changes for ARES-OKLAHOMA. These changes are to better align our leadership coverage by Population and to better fit with our partners.

Most notable is that were changing some labeling of Zones to REGIONS and reducing the number of Districts to 12 (two per Region).

Each of the Regions now have a label that is in relation to its geographic proximity.
Zone 1 is now North-West RegionZone 2 is now South-West RegionZone 3 is now Capital RegionZone 4 is now North-East RegionZone 5 is now Tulsa RegionZone 6 is now South-East Region

With Oklahoma's vast distances, huge landmass and sparse population; team and leadership focus will emphasized at the District level.

Regional EC's have been asked to make recommendations as who will remain as District EC for each of the 12 Districts and/or which County EC will be willing to step up to District EC. A list of which counties are in what districts was emailed out on the ARES-OK yahoo email list.If you have questions or you would like to make a nomination for District EC please contact your Regional EC.
To contact your Regional EC you may email them directly (if you have their email handy) or via the ARES-OK website using the CONTACT US tab on the left side of the page.

Changes will be made to the ARES-OK website soon - a bit of reprograming is required to make these changes on the site.

You are always welcome to contact me (email works best) if you have questions.
Thank you & 73,

National Order of the Arrow special event station set #Scouts #ARRL #hamradio

K2BSA/8 operating from NOAC.
Boy Scouts of America’s National Order of the Arrow Conference Special Event Amateur Radio Station, K2BSA/8, is coming to Michigan State University August 3rd to 7th in East Lansing Michigan.

The National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) is the premier event for the Order of the Arrow (OA), (Scouting’s Honor Society) and is the second largest national gathering of Scouts.   15,000 Arrowmen will gather from across the nation at Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan Aug 3rd to the 8th to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow.

To celebrate this unique event the Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club, (MSUARC) W8MSU will be sponsoring a special event Amateur Radio station, K2BSA/8.  The station will be located close to the exhibitor’s tents and will be operating on 20 and 40 M, the local repeater (442.900 + 77) and IRLP node (7930) in addition to Echolink (289654).  The station will be manned by ham radio operators from across the nation Monday through Friday 9-12 and 1- 5 EDT.  This event is supported by ICOM radio.

If you are one of the lucky ones attending NOAC, stop by and guest operate or if you can’t make it in person, please listen and contact us on the airwaves.  We are attempting to have contacts from all 50 states in addition to as many Scouts, Scouters and Brother Arrowmen, past and present, as we can.  There will be a special K2BSA/8 NOAC QSL card email available. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime QSL.

Our goal is to get as many Scouts on the air as possible locally and at a distance and share the exciting world of Radio Scouting with them.  We’ll share how they can integrate Amateur Radio into their outings, high adventure treks and Merit Badge advancement for fun, education and safety.

For additional information contact Fred Donkin, KA7MMM, fredrick.j.donkin@L-3com.com or Don Kunst W3LNE, W3LNE@ARRL.NET.

Followup report for #HamHoliday #ARRL #hamradio

Ham Holiday 2015 is now in the books.  The Board had started searching for a new home before the venue threw us a few curves this year.  Friday was challenging and Saturday had a few bumps, but the ham spirit prevailed.  The vendors all had a good show and two more have committed for next year.
Dave, NN1N spoke to a standing room only crowd at the ARRL
forum Saturday morning.  (N5NUK photo)

I would like to say "thank you" to everyone who came out and those who worked the show.  I'll add a special "thanks" to NN1N, ARRL Director of Field Operations Dave Patton for a great presentation at our banquet.

I can't wait for next year!

Charles R. "Dick" Rouse
CORA President

From W5NOR:

Ham Holiday has come and gone now. I’ll have more to say about it at a later time, but today I’ll just say that regarding the Testing which Peter and the SCARS VE Team manned, there were 6 new Techs, 4 who upgraded to General, and 2 Extras from the session. A good day in a very spartan location.

The Scouts got a Thank YOU:

Hello Mr. Way,

On behalf of Troop 94, we wanted to thank you and your two instructors for a wonderful Radio Merit Badge Class on Saturday.

All of our 8  scouts who attended enjoyed your class so much and a few  went home telling their parents they wanted to start a new hobby….

We want you to know that your time and effort is much appreciated.
You are investing knowledge, time and energy in these young scouts lives and it will be something they will always remember and appreciate, and their parents too.

Sincerely,
Colleen Karow
Committee Member/Troop 94

From NN1N:

Tnx for bringing me to the Ham Holiday.  I thought the show was excellent and you guys did a great job pulling it through the challenges which were quite rough!

Everyone was so friendly!  Out in town, in the hotel, at the show – everywhere.

Riley Hollingsworth To Be Guest on W5KUB Roundtable #ARRL #hamradio

It's time for Amateur Radio Roundtable, a live weekly amateur radio webcast and simulcasted shortwave program, held every Tuesday night at 8 PM CDT (0100 UTC Wednesday). The show can viewed at W5KUB.com or heard on shortwave radio station, WTWW on 5085 KHz. Tom Medlin, W5KUB, is joined by co-host Ted Randall, WB8PUM, from the QSO Radio Show. The show covers a wide range of topics for ham radio operators, shortwave listeners, and electronic hobbyists; including balloon launches, Satellite, go-kits, emergency communications, SDR, digital modes, DXing, home brewing, and more.

This week's guest is Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH, from Gettysburg, PA. Riley retired in 2008 from the FCC where he was Special Counsel for the Spectrum Enforcement Division in the Amateur Radio Service. He will share how he helped to clean up growing problems on the ham bands. He will also share his thoughts regarding how to conduct ourselves on the air and problem resolution. The chat room and phone lines will be available so our viewers and listeners can ask direct questions to Riley.

Our guest for the following week's show (August 4) will be Charlie Emerson, N4OKL, from Huntsville, Alabama. Charlie is chairman of the Huntsville Hamfest which will be held August 15-16. During the hamfest, W5KUB.com will be awarding donated vendor prizes, including a prize from the Huntsville Hamfest committee.

ARRL New Mexico state convention and Duke City Hamfest. #arrl #hamradio

Our New Mexico friends want you to know about this.

The following is from Bill Ripley KY5Q, chairman of the 2015 Albuquerque
Duke City Hamfest

2015 Albuquerque Duke City Hamfest & NM State Convention

Join us on August 7 - 9, 2015 for the Duke City Hamfest (DCHF) held at
the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque, NM.  This year's event is slated
to be even bigger and better than last year, with 3-days of forums,
programs, demonstrations, hands-on projects, banquets, commercial
exhibits, flea markets, tailgating, and family activities.

Our special guest speakers this year include Riley Hollingsworth
(retired FCC Special Counsel) and Bob Allison from the ARRL labs.
Riley and Bob will alternately speak at each of the banquets and at
forums during the event.

Friday AM leads off with Contest Academy, an all-day session for
contesters new and old.  The commercial sales and amateur radio indoor
sales area starts mid-day Friday.  Friday Evening is a Mixer with cash
bar and finger food.

Saturday AM leads off with the DX/Contesting Breakfast hosted by the
Albuquerque DX Association.  Plan on a full day of programs and
exhibits.  We'll have a High Altitude Balloon Launch on Saturday
(pending weather), with multiple simultaneous balloons, and payloads
built by the amateur radio community and kids participating in the STEM
Trajectory Initiative at their schools.  Saturday evening closes with
the annual awards banquet.

Sunday AM starts with a breakfast where new hams and youth are
encouraged to attend.  We will have presentation about the balloon
mission by the kids and leaders with exciting film video, still
pictures and data, as well as another engaging program.  A Skywarn
class, more programs and forums, and both commercial and amateur sales
continues till mid-day.

We are working on a Good Equipment auction on Friday or Saturday
(TBD), and a Transmitter Hunt for Sunday.  We'll have major prize
drawings on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as hourly door prizes all
three days.

The Marriott Pyramid is a great venue, with all 5 of the parallel
tracks and all sales held in the same building. Join us at the hotel
for fun time with great rates.  Because of the convention center
layout, this will be much more convenient than in previous venues.

Check the website and register for email updates and changes.

We have a few forum slots available.  If you know of a great forum, or
would like to present, please contact me ASAP.

For information, contact Bill Ripley, Chairman, at

West Gulf Division Newsletter July 2015 #ARRL #hamradio

---H.R. 1301 Gains Sponsors
---Senate Companion Bill S 1685 Filed
---W1AW on the Air in July
---Planned events for K5RAV and N5AUS
---Upcoming Hamfests and Conventions

---HR1301 Gains Sponsors

The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 now has 85 sponsors in the House!
H.R.1301 in the US House of Representatives would direct the FCC to
extend its rules relating to reasonable accommodation of Amateur
Service communications to private land use restrictions. US Rep Adam
Kinzinger (R-IL) introduced HR 1301 on March 4 with 12 original
cosponsors from both sides of the aisle -- seven Republicans and five
Democrats in the US House.  US Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced S
1685 on June 26, with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) as the original
cosponsor, into the US Senate.

The Amateur Radio Parity Act would require the FCC to amend its Part 97
Amateur Service rules to apply the three-part test of the PRB-1 federal
pre-emption policy to include homeowners association regulations and
deed restrictions, often referred to as "covenants, conditions, and
restrictions" (CC&Rs). At present, PRB-1 only applies to state and
local zoning laws and ordinances. The FCC has been reluctant to extend
the same legal protections to include private land-use agreements
without direction from Congress.

H.R. 1301 has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Rep Greg Walden, W7EQI (R-OR), chairs that panel's Communications and
Technology Subcommittee, which will consider the measure. S 1685 has
been referred to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation
Committee's subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and
the Internet, which is chaired by the bill's sponsor, Wicker.

ARRL members are urged to contact their members of both the House and
the Senate, asking them to sign on to the bill as a co-sponsor. Route
letters for your member of Congress to:

---Senate Companion Bill S 1685 Filed

S 1685, Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015, introduced in the US Senate.
On June 25th, S 1685 Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 was introduced in
the US Senate by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) with Senator Richard
Blumenthal (D-CT) as the initial co-sponsor.  The wording in S 1685 and
HR 1301 are identical.    S 1685 was read twice and referred to the US
Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which is
chaired by Senator John Thune (R-SD).

For more information, search for S 1685 on the ARRL website.
www.arrl.org

For comments by Senator Wicker on the benefits of S 1685, search for
Senator Wicker on the ARRL website.
www.arrl.org

Since the House and Senate operate independently, it is always a good
strategy to run legislation in both houses of Congress.

---W1AW will be Activated in July by the WGD Boys

Director Woolweaver and Vice Director Stratton will activate W1AW at
ARRL HQ's in Newington, CT on Sunday, July 19th from 0900 CDT to 1400
CDT.  The usual 14285 KHz, plus or minus QRM, frequency will be used.
It is possible that a frequency on 15 meters will also be active
depending upon propagation.  During the last operation of W1AW (W100AW
Jan 2014) by the West Gulf Division, it was found that 15 meters did
much better into the WGD than 20 meters.  Check for a Notice of
Operation on Twitter and Facebook on Sunday morning, July 19th for last
minute details and frequencies.

Find us on Twitter @ARRLWGD and on Facebook at ARRL West Gulf
Division.

---Planned events for K5RAV and N5AUS

Director Woolweaver, K5RAV and Vice Director Stratton, N5AUS plan to
attend the following upcoming events:

K5RAV
---ARRL Board Meeting, Newington, CT, July 15-18
---South Texas Section Convention, Austin Summerfest, Aug 7-8
---South Texas Hamfest, Aransas Pass, TX, Oct 31

N5AUS
---ARRL Board Meeting, Newington, CT, July 15-18
---Oklahoma Section Convention, Ham Holiday 2015, July 24-25
---South Texas Section Convention, Austin Summerfest, Aug 7-8

ARRL Convention and Hamfest events are a great place to visit with the
Division and Section Leadership! Each event will also include an ARRL
forum where you can receive additional insight into Division and
Section matters.

At any time that you have a concern or just want to say hello, contact
Director Woolweaver at K5RAV@arrl.org.
